326.14 PLATES AND RECEIPTS -- REGISTRATION PERIOD AND RENEWAL -- PENALTY. 1. The department shall issue a single registration plate and registration receipt for each vehicle pursuant to apportionment agreements or provisions authorized under this chapter. The registration period for a vehicle registered pursuant to this chapter is from January 1 through December 31 of each year. 2. An application for renewal of registration shall be postmarked or received in the office of motor carrier services of the department no later than January 31. A five percent late filing penalty shall be assessed to an application for renewal postmarked or received on or after February 1, with an additional five percent penalty assessed the first of each month thereafter until the application is filed.
