Chapter 65.--PUBLIC HEALTH
Article 63.--SOCIAL WORKERS

      65-6302.   Definitions.As used in this act, unless the context clearly requires otherwise, thefollowing words and phrases shall have the meaning ascribed to them inthis section:

      (a)   "Board" means the behavioral sciences regulatory board created by K.S.A.74-7501.

      (b)   "Social work practice" means the professional activity ofhelping individuals, groups or communities enhance or restore theircapacity for physical, social and economic functioning and theprofessional application of social work values, principles andtechniques in areas such as psychotherapy, social serviceadministration, social planning, social work consultation and socialwork research to one or more of the following ends: Helping peopleobtain tangible services; counseling with individuals, families andgroups; helping communities or groups provide or improve social andhealth services; and participating in relevant social action. Thepractice of social work requires knowledge of human development andbehavior; of social, economic and cultural institutions and forces; andof the interaction of all these factors. Social work practice includesthe teaching of practicum courses in social work and includes the diagnosisand treatment of mental disorders as authorized under K.S.A. 65-6306 and65-6319, and amendments thereto.

      (c)   "Psychotherapy" means the use of psychological and socialmethods within a professional relationship, to assist the person orpersons to achieve a better psychosocial adaptation to acquire greaterhuman realization of psychosocial potential and adaptation; to modifyinternal and external conditions which affect individuals, groups orcommunities in respect to behavior, emotions and thinking, in respect totheir intra-personal and inter-personal processes. Forms of psychotherapyinclude but are not restricted to individual psychotherapy, conjoint maritaltherapy, family therapy and group psychotherapy.
