Chapter 72.--SCHOOLS
Article 11.--SCHOOL ATTENDANCE, CURRICULUM AND ACCREDITATION

      72-1127.   Accredited schools; mandatory subjects andareas of instruction; legislative goals.(a) In addition to subjects or areas of instruction requiredbyK.S.A. 72-1101,72-1103, 72-1117, 72-1126 and 72-7535, and amendments thereto, every accreditedschool in thestate of Kansas shall teach the subjects and areas of instructionadopted by the state boardof education as of January 1, 2005.

      (b)   Every accredited high school in the state of Kansas also shall teach thesubjects and areasof instruction necessary to meet the graduation requirements adopted by thestate board ofeducation as of January 1, 2005.

      (c)   Subjects and areas of instruction shall be designed by the state board ofeducation to achieve thefollowing goalsestablished by the legislature to allow for the:

      (1)   Development of sufficient oral and written communication skills whichenable studentsto function in a complex and rapidly changing society;

      (2)   acquisition of sufficient knowledge of economic, social and politicalsystems whichenable students to understand the issues that affect the community, state andnation;

      (3)   development of students' mental and physical wellness;

      (4)   development of knowledge of the fine arts to enable students toappreciate thecultural andhistorical heritage of others;

      (5)   training or preparation for advanced training in either academic orvocational fields soas to enable students to choose and pursue life work intelligently;

      (6)   development of sufficient levels of academic or vocational skills toenable students tocompete favorably in academics and the job market; and

      (7)   needs of students requiring special education services.

      (d)   Nothing in this section shall be construed as relieving the state orschool districts fromother duties and requirements imposed by state or federal law including, butnot limited to, at-riskprograms for pupils needing intervention, programs concerning special educationand relatedservices and bilingual education.
