Section 3-101 - Definitions.

§ 3-101. Definitions.
 

(a)  In general.- In this subtitle the following words have the meanings indicated.

(b)  Licensed health care professional.- "Licensed health care professional" means a duly licensed or certified: 

(1) physician; 

(2) surgeon; 

(3) podiatrist; 

(4) osteopath; 

(5) osteopathic physician; 

(6) osteopathic surgeon; 

(7) physician assistant; 

(8) registered nurse; 

(9) licensed practical nurse; 

(10) nurse practitioner; 

(11) dentist; 

(12) pharmacist; or 

(13) emergency medical services provider, in accordance with § 13-516 of the Education Article.

The reference to a "certified" practitioner is added to reflect that several of the types of practitioner listed in this subsection are "certified" rather than "licensed" - physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and two of the five types of emergency medical services providers: emergency medical technician - ambulance and emergency medical technician - basic. 
 

In item (13) of this subsection, the reference to an emergency medical services provider licensed or certified "in accordance with" ED § 13-516 is substituted for the former reference to an emergency medical services provider "as defined in" that provision for clarity. 

(c)  Suicide.- "Suicide" means the act or instance in which an individual intentionally takes the individual's own life.
