MASSACHUSETTS STATUTES AND CODES

Section 2 Exemptions; application of sections

Section 2. (a) No certificate of title need be obtained for: (1) A vehicle owned by the United States unless it is registered in accordance with the provisions of chapter ninety; provided, that a vehicle on loan from the United States or from a motor vehicle manufacturer or distributor to the commonwealth or a political subdivision thereof, may be registered by the commonwealth or political subdivision, or by an agency of the commonwealth or a political subdivision that the loaned vehicle has been re-assigned to, without the need to apply for a certificate of title, if the registrant is in possession of a written agreement evidencing the vehicle loan and the agreement is signed by an authorized employee of the United States government agency or motor vehicle manufacturer or distributor providing the vehicle, or if reassigned from an agency of the commonwealth or a political subdivision, it is signed by an authorized employee of the agency or political subdivision of the commonwealth which received the vehicle from the United States or motor vehicle manufacturer or distributor and re-assigned it to the registrant; (2) A vehicle owned by a manufacturer or dealer and held for sale, even though incidentally moved on the highway or used for purposes of testing or demonstration; or a vehicle used by a manufacturer solely for testing; (3) A vehicle owned by a nonresident of the commonwealth for which a currently effective certificate of title has been issued in the state of residence; (4) A vehicle regularly engaged in the interstate transportation of persons or property for which a currently effective certificate of title has been issued in another state or country; (5) A vehicle moved solely by animal power; (6) An implement of husbandry; (7) Special mobile equipment; (8) A self-propelled wheel chair or invalid tricycle; (9) [There is no clause (9).]; (10) Trailers having gross weight of three thousand pounds or less; (11) [There is no clause (11)]; (12) Manufactured home, as defined in section thirty-two Q of chapter one hundred and forty.
