701.350. Definitions.

Definitions.

701.350. As used in sections 701.350 to 701.380, thefollowing terms mean:

(1) "Alteration", any change or addition to any equipmentother than ordinary repairs and replacements;

(2) "Automatic transfer device", a mechanism whichautomatically moves a load consisting of a cart, tote box,pallet, wheeled vehicle, box or similar object to and from theplatform of the lift but does not carry personnel;

(3) "Board", the elevator safety board appointed asprovided in sections 701.350 to 701.380;

(4) "Department", the department of public safety;

(5) "Dumbwaiter", a hoisting and lowering mechanism with acar of limited capacity and size which moves in guides in asubstantially vertical direction, and is used exclusively forcarrying material;

(6) "Elevator", a hoisting and lowering mechanism designedto carry passengers or authorized personnel and equipped with acar which moves in fixed guides and serves two or more fixedlandings, but not including installations used in privatesingle-family residences;

(7) "Escalator", a power-driven inclined continuousstairway used for the raising and lowering of passengers;

(8) "Existing installation", an installation for whichprior to August 28, 1994:

(a) All work to install the installation was completed; or

(b) The plans and specifications were filed with the boardand work begun not later than twelve months after the date of thepermit;

(9) "Freight elevator", an elevator used primarily forcarrying freight and on which only the operator and the personsnecessary for unloading and loading the freight are permitted toride;

(10) "Installation", an elevator, dumbwaiter, escalator,material lift, inclined lift, special purpose personnel elevator,or moving walk, including its hoistway, hoistway incloser andrelated construction, and all machinery and equipment;

(11) "Major alteration", an alteration to an installationas described by the rules and regulations issued by the board;

(12) "Manlift", a device consisting of a power-drivenendless belt moving in one direction only and provided with stepsand platforms and handholds attached to it for the transportationof personnel from floor to floor which is not accessible to orused by the general public;

(13) "Material lift", a hoisting and lowering mechanismnormally classified as an elevator which has been modified toadapt it for the automatic movement of material by means of anintegrally mounted automatic transfer device;

(14) "Moving walk", a type of passenger-carrying device inor on which passengers stand, sit, or walk and in which themovement of the passenger-carrying device is uninterrupted andremains parallel to its direction of motion;

(15) "New installation", any installation not classified asan existing installation, or any existing installation, moved toa new location subsequent to August 28, 1994;

(16) "Special inspector", an inspector certified by theboard, but not employed by the department of public safety or bya municipality or political subdivision;

(17) "Special purpose personnel elevator", an elevatorinstalled in a structure and location to provide verticaltransportation of authorized personnel and their tools andequipment only. Such elevator is typically installed instructures such as grain elevators, radio antennae and bridgetowers, underground facilities, dams, power plants, constructionjob sites and similar structures, where, by reason of theirlimited use and types of construction of the structure served,full compliance with the applicable standards is not practical ornecessary;

(18) "Stairway inclined lift", a power passenger liftinstalled on an incline for raising and lowering persons from onefloor to another.
