§ 20‑69.  Divisionauthorized to assign new engine number.

The owner of a motor vehicleupon which the engine number or serial number has become illegible or has beenremoved or obliterated shall immediately make application to the Division for anew engine or serial number for such motor vehicle. The Division, whensatisfied that the applicant is the lawful owner of the vehicle referred to insuch application is hereby authorized to assign a new engine or serial numberthereto, and shall require that such number, together with the name of thisState, or a symbol indicating this State, be stamped upon the engine, or in theevent such number is a serial number, then upon such portion of the motorvehicle as shall be designated by the Division.
