§ 86A‑24. Apprenticeship.
(a) Before being issuedan apprentice license, an applicant must pass an examination conducted by theBoard to determine his competence, including his knowledge of barbering,sanitary rules and regulations, and knowledge of diseases of the face, skin andscalp.
(b) An apprenticelicense expires on May 31 of each year. Every holder of an apprentice licenseshall annually renew the apprentice license by the expiration date and pay therequired renewal fee. An apprentice license issued under this Chapter isautomatically suspended by operation of law after failure to renew theapprentice license by the expiration date. An apprentice whose apprenticelicense has expired may have the certificate restored immediately upon payingall lapsed renewal fees and the required late fee. The certificate ofregistration of an apprentice is valid only so long as the apprentice worksunder the supervision of a registered barber. The registered barber shallremain present on the premises of the barbershop at all times while theapprentice is working. No apprentice shall operate a barbershop.
(c) On completion of atleast one year's apprenticeship, evidenced by affidavit of the supervisingregistered licensed barber or barbers, and upon meeting the other requirementsof G.S. 86A‑3, the apprentice shall be issued a license as a registeredbarber, pursuant to G.S. 86A‑10. No registered apprentice may practicefor a period exceeding three years without retaking and passing the requiredexamination to receive a certificate as a registered apprentice.
