§ 31-15-4 - Overtaking on left. - Rhode Island Statutes

SECTION 31-15-4

   § 31-15-4  Overtaking on left. – The following rules shall govern the overtaking and passing of vehiclesproceeding in the same direction, subject to those limitations, exceptions, andspecial rules stated in this chapter:

   (1) The driver of a vehicle overtaking another vehicleproceeding in the same direction shall give a timely, audible signal and shallpass to the left at a safe distance and shall not again drive to the right sideof the roadway until safely clear of the overtaken vehicle.

   (2) Except when overtaking and passing on the right ispermitted, the driver of an overtaken vehicle shall give way to the right infavor of the overtaking vehicle on audible signal and shall not increase thespeed of his or her vehicle until completely passed by the overtaking vehicle.

   (3) Violations of this section are subject to finesenumerated in § 31-41.1-4.
