§ 1604 -   Burial expenses

§ 1604. Burial expenses

Whenever an honorably discharged union soldier or sailor of the Civil War or a soldier or sailor of the Spanish American War, of the Philippine Insurrection, of the China Boxer Rebellion or honorably discharged member of the armed forces of the United States of America of World War I, World War II or Korean conflict or the widow of such soldier or sailor or member of the armed forces of the United States shall decease, and the commander and adjutant of the Grand Army Post, of the Spanish American War Veterans' Association, of an American Legion Post or of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Post or a Disabled American Veterans Post of which he was a member, and, if not a member of any Grand Army Post, Spanish American War Veterans' Association, American Legion Post or Veterans of the Foreign Wars of the United States Post or of a Disabled American Veterans Post in the state, then a majority of the selectmen of a town or the mayor of a city in which such soldier, sailor, member of the armed forces of the United States or widow resided, shall under oath certify to the commissioner of finance and management that such soldier, sailor, member of the armed forces of the United States or widow did not leave sufficient estate to pay the expenses of the funeral and a headstone, the commissioner of finance and management shall thereupon issue his warrant payable from the moneys annually available for the purposes of this section, in favor of the commander of such Grand Army Post, Spanish American War Veterans' Association, American Legion Post, Veterans of the Foreign Wars of the United States Post, Disabled American Veterans Post, selectmen or mayor for a sum not exceeding $ 150.00, to defray such burial expenses and provide a headstone at the grave of such deceased soldier, sailor, member of the armed forces of the United States or widow.
