19.2-200 - Duties of grand jury.

§ 19.2-200. Duties of grand jury.

The grand jury shall inquire of and present all felonies, misdemeanors andviolations of penal laws committed within the jurisdiction of the respectivecourts wherein it is sworn; except that no presentment shall be made of amatter for which there is no corporal punishment, but only a fine, where thefine is limited to an amount not exceeding five dollars. After a regulargrand jury has concluded its deliberation on bills of indictment and made itsreturn thereon, the court shall inquire of it whether it recommends that aspecial grand jury be impanelled to perform any of the functions provided forin subdivision (2) of § 19.2-191. If a majority of the grand jurors respondsin the affirmative, the court shall impanel so many of that jury as answer inthe affirmative and are also willing to serve thereon, plus any additionalmembers as may be necessary to complete the panel, as a special grand juryand if a minority of the grand jurors responds in the affirmative, the courtmay impanel a special grand jury in the same manner.
