§ 22.1-214.3. Department to develop certain curriculum guidelines; Board toapprove.
The Department of Education shall develop curricula for the school-ageresidents of the state training centers for individuals with mentalretardation and curriculum guidelines for the school-age residents of thestate mental health facilities in cooperation with the Department ofBehavioral Health and Developmental Services and representatives of theteachers employed to provide instruction to the children. Prior toimplementation, the Board of Education shall approve these curricula andcurriculum guidelines.
These curricula and curriculum guidelines shall be designed to provide arange of programs and suggested program sequences for different functioninglevels and handicaps and shall be reviewed and revised at least every threeyears. In addition to academic programming, the curriculum guidelines for theschool-age residents of the state mental health facilities shall includeaffective education and physical education as well as independent living andcareer and technical education, with particular emphasis on the needs ofolder adolescents and young adults.
